An off-duty New Jersey State Police trooper was killed in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, state police officials announced Friday.
Authorities said Trooper Glenny Almonte was traveling in a personal vehicle on the southbound lanes of the Turnpike when he struck a curb near the Vince Lombardi service area. Almonte's car ended up in the path of a tractor-trailer that was traveling southbound and struck the driver's side of the vehicle.
Almonte was pulled from the vehicle and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"The loss of Trooper Glenny Almonte saddens the entire State Police family. We are offering support to Trooper Almonte's loved ones as well as to all of our employees touched by this tragedy," said Col. Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the department.
Trooper Almonte was a member of the 152nd State Police Class that graduated the academy on Oct. 4, 2013. He was assigned to Totowa Station.
