Belleville has declared a state of emergency and closed all schools this morning as a massive warehouse fire spread to multiple buildings and force evacuations across the town.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at a commercial mattress warehouse complex in Essex County and quickly escalated into a multi‑alarm emergency. Officials say three to four warehouses within the industrial complex were involved as flames spread rapidly.
Sunday coverage
Belleville officials say the fire grew out of control, prompting the township’s Office of Emergency Management to declare an emergency as conditions worsened overnight.
Strong winds fueled the fire, helping embers spread and ignite at least two secondary fires, according to officials. Portions of multiple buildings collapsed as thick black smoke billowed into the sky and could be seen for miles.
The mayor says hazardous materials were stored on site, including oxygen and helium tanks, raising concerns about potential explosions. A nearby cardboard factory was also identified as a major concern due to its proximity to the fire.
Firefighting efforts were complicated by low water pressure, at times limiting crews’ ability to attack the flames. The Department of Public Works worked to tap into a larger water main in an effort to improve water supply.
Firefighters from neighboring communities, including Newark, Bloomfield, Orange and Lyndhurst, responded to provide mutual aid as crews worked to contain the blaze.
Multiple families were evacuated from the area around Cortlandt Street. As of Sunday night, several homes and businesses were without power, and some were also without water.
The American Red Cross responded to assist residents affected by the fire. Disaster Services volunteers provided emergency assistance to eight people across four families, including temporary lodging, food and clothing. Disaster health, mental health and spiritual care services were also made available. Officials say one additional family left the scene and will be contacted for assistance.
Crews remain on scene this morning as the firefighters continue fight hot spots. Officials say there is still no word on what caused the fire. No injuries have been reported.
