The Department of Transportation has begun its annual statewide pothole repair campaign.

Potholes are created by water seeping into cracks in the asphalt and freezing, so even though three hasn’t been much snow this winter, there has still been a significant amount of rain and freezing rain and fluctuating temperatures.

Authorities say that the key to pothole repair work is that drivers remember New Jersey's Move Over Law when they see a crew at work.

"if you have the room to move over, please do so, and if not, make sure you slow down to stay safe because this is their office and we want to make sure everyone gets home every night,” says NJDOT spokesperson Steve Schapiro.

So far this fiscal year, the DOT has repaired 116,025 potholes, with the busiest pothole repair season just starting and where possible, crews will limit their daytime work hours to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
