A Perth Amboy police lieutenant is being questioned following a deadly crash over the weekend involving a man riding a scooter.
The state Attorney General’s Office says it started an investigation because authorities said the victim had been speeding away from police before his death.
Authorities haven't revealed the name of the man who died while riding the scooter along State Street, but there is a photo of him, along with flowers at the scene of the crash, which is technically in Woodbridge.
The state Attorney General says it started in Perth Amboy on Saturday night when the lieutenant in the area of High Street put on his lights and attempted to pull over three people riding scooters.
Two of those on scooters immediately took off. The third initially pulled over and then sped off.
Investigators say the lieutenant gave chase north on State Street. Authorities say that as he approached Woodbridge, he turned off his lights and made a U-turn.
A short time later, Woodbridge police got a call of a scooter crash between Arbor and Ferry streets, about one-quarter mile from where the lieutenant gave up.
It is not currently known if another car was involved in the crash.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability will now determine if the lieutenant and the chase played any part in that crash. It will question witnesses, review dash cam video, and then the case will be put before a grand jury.
