Two senior corrections officers are facing multiple charges related to sexual assault and official misconduct while working at the Female Secure Care and Intake Facility in Bordentown.
Gary Nieves, 53, and William Young, 35, are accused of sexually assaulting and having unlawful sexual contact with an 18-year-old resident of the facility.
Attorney General Matt Platkin says that the victim confirmed that the incidents happened in August.
The attorney general announced the charges during a news conference in Trenton Tuesday afternoon.
“Young people confined to juvenile facilities are extremely vulnerable. They deserve safety, care and respect. The men and women who staff these facilities understand that mission and work tirelessly to achieve it,” Platkin said. “Whereas alleged here, corrections officers take advantage of the youth that they are supposed to protect. We will route out misconduct and prosecute it to the fullest extent of the law.”
If convicted of the charges, Nieves and Young could face up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison for each count. Both are currently being held pending a detention hearing.
