South Oaks Hospital to reopen inpatient detox programs

South Oaks Hospital in Amityville is planning to reopen its inpatient detox and rehab programs after closing during the pandemic.
James Madden, of Merrick, says his life was spiraling out of control in 2019 due to his drug and alcohol addictions.
After hitting rock bottom, Madden says he sought help and checked himself into the inpatient detox program at South Oaks. He spent 14 days there and says the program saved his life.
“I had to swallow my pride to come here…I guess you would call it a spiritual awakening,” he says.
However, when the pandemic hit, South Oaks had to close its inpatient programs, even though doctors say substance abuse has risen during the pandemic.
After being closed for 15 months, the inpatient detox program at South Oaks will reopen on June 27.
Dr. Jaclene Jason says they have more than 50 beds to help those struggling with addiction.
“It's really a way to come off of alcohol and substances in a safe way that allows for someone to be more comfortable, because it can be a really physical and mentally uncomfortable process to just detox in general,” says Dr. Jason. “Our program really allows 24/7 monitoring, really compassionate staff, medications to help people feel comfortable so that you can get through that really critical time.”
Meanwhile, Madden is almost two years sober and is soon to be a father to a girl due in August.
To help anyone struggling with addiction, he says, “There's help out there. Use it, take advantage of it. You're never alone.”
