A group of southern New Jersey beer breweries joined forces to create a beer – the sales of which will help local charities.
Double Nickle Brewing Company has partnered with Cape May Brewing Company, Tonewood Brewing and Urban Village Brewing Company to create the beer “Friendsgiving,” a hazy IPA that will raise thousands for three local charities: Philadbundance, Virtua Mobile Farmers Market and Cathedral Kitchen.
"Food insecurity, to us, is a keystone issue from a sense that it's really hard to work on other problems that someone might be facing if you don't know where your next meal is coming from,” says Double Nickle marketing director John Dalsey.
Last year, sales from “Friendsgiving” brought in more than $45,000, which was then donated back to the local community. Philadelphia based Dietz & Watson also joined in, donating thousands of dollars’ worth of food.
Cathedral Kitchen was able to purchase some new equipment with the donation.
"They bought my new dishwasher and that's probably the biggest piece of equipment and a valuable piece of equipment that I have in my facility. Without that dishwasher, this place cannot operate,” says Cathedral Kitchen executive chef John Wayne Jernigan.
Virtua Mobile Farmers Market was able to buy more produce to distribute to the community.
Dalsey says that “Friendsgiving” not only gives back to the community, but highlights one of the most important parts of the craft beer industry.
"It’s very collaborative. Everyone's trying to help each other out,” he says. “It's not so cutthroat and spreading that ethos into other areas to build support for local charities and stuff like that is a really cool component and a cool part of our industry that we like sharing with others."
Dalsey says that the goal for this year is to raise $100,000 from the beer sales.
