A man who allegedly stabbed his father and set a small fire inside a home surrendered to police after a barricade situation early Monday in Paterson.

The incident began around midnight on Berkshire Avenue. Firefighters from Paterson and surrounding municipalities responded along with Paterson police.

A source familiar with the situation told News 12 that "a man stabbed his father and set a fire." The man then barricaded himself inside the home as officers worked to communicate with him.

Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said the incident was resolved peacefully. He also said the fire inside the home was not significant.

The stabbing victim suffered non‑serious injuries, according the mayor. The suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation. No one else was injured.

The incident unfolded as firefighters and mutual aid crews were already battling a large apartment fire on Getty Avenue that displaced at least 24 people.
