Somerset County received more mail-in ballots Tuesday night than in any presidential election, and because of that, they received a court order to stop counting last night and start again this morning.

Counting began again at 9 a.m. and they have some 19,000 mail-in ballots.

"Even presidential numbers would have been fine but this was beyond presidential numbers,” says Jerry Midgette, Somerset County Board of Elections Administrator. “This is a good thing. We want people to come out and vote and the mail-in ballots were a tremendous amount of ballots that came back, a high return rate which is also a good thing. The county clerk sent out about 25 or 26,000 applications, and we received back close to 19, maybe 20,000 back. That's a high return. It's all good for our democracy."

A majority of the ballots will be scanned by a machine, but a few 100 will have to be counted by hand.
