A New Jersey restaurant has forfeited its trademark to the phrase “Taco Tuesday.”

Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar in Somers Point had the rights to the phrase for more than 40 years. It was the lone holdout clinging to the trademark after an effort by Taco Bell to make the phrase trademark-free.

Taco Bell was closer to its goal when Taco John’s, a smaller regional chain, abandoned its trademark registration on the phrase in 49 other states, leaving Gregory’s to fight the battle alone.

Taco Bell said the phrase “Taco Tuesday” is commonly used and should be free for everyone to use.
