Snowy weather causes some damage, power outages around New Jersey
A winter storm dropped at least 10 inches of snow on parts of New Jersey causing trees and power lines to come down.
Edison resident Phillis Dubras says that the heavy snow caused a large tree to fall on top of her home’s carport. She says that the noise of the crash woke her up.
“I was in bed sleeping at 3 a.m. and I heard a tremendous noise,” she says. “I thought an airplane crashed.”
Dubras and her adult son who was also inside the house were not hurt.
As temperatures rose Monday, the snow started to melt, making it heavier. Tree experts say that homeowners should inspect them to make sure they are not rotting.
“We can see a lot of symptoms on the tree before this happens,” says Yamil Diaz with Diaz Tree Services. “You have to call any tree company with experience and that would prevent this.”
Downed trees and downed utility poles left thousands of New Jersey residents in the dark as well.
The snow has cleared, but forecasters say that temperatures should become very cold over the next few days.
Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty says that the town is preparing for the bitter cold air.
“Everybody has to understand it's going to get very cold. Make sure you stock up on food....and if you're out there and you need shelter, the firehouse is where our warming center is and make sure you get there,” he says.
New Jersey residents are reminded to clear any snow off their vehicles, which is state law. Homeowners should also clear sidewalks and driveways.
