(AP) - The children of an elderly couple whowere brutally slain in their southern New Jersey home have won a$100 million verdict against the killer.
But the family of Shirley and Richard Hazard doubt they willever receive any money from Brian Wakefield, who initially wassentenced to death for the January 2001 slayings in Pleasantville. That was commuted to life without parole after the state abolishedcapital punishment in 2007.
"It was a matter of principle and justice, and because of thepain and suffering that my parents felt," said Sharon HazardJohnson, one of the couple's five children. The Hazards werebeaten, stabbed and set afire during a home invasion.
An Atlantic County jury who heard their civil suit took just 10minutes to reach their verdict on Thursday, following a two-daytrial.
