A ribbon-cutting on Smith Street in Perth Amboy's downtown district marked Small Business Saturday and helped kick off the shopping season.
"It's not only about shopping small but also the fact that a lot of their employees live and work right here in Perth Amboy," Mayor Wilda Diaz says.
Shoppers and businesses celebrated with family activities and discounts.
Local officials say purchasing at small stores helps keep people employed.
