A 44-year-old woman was found dead inside a Union County home that caught fire.
Rahway Fire Chief Michael Roberts tells News 12 New Jersey that firefighters found the woman on the upper floors of a Washington Street home. Roberts say that crews were able to get the fire out but did not get to the woman before she died.
“She was loved by everyone, as you can see,” says family friend Bishop Charles W. Harris Jr. “The community, the family, her church family – everyone is out here.”
News 12 is withholding the woman’s identity until it is confirmed by officials.
A witness says that the fire seemed to have started in the garage or basement of the home.
Three other people were able to escape the fire, according to officials.
The American Red Cross responded to the fire to help those who were displaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
