Shannan Gilbert's mother calls for FBI probe

(AP) - The mother of a prostitute whose remainswere found in a Long Island marsh says she believes her daughterwas murdered by a serial killer, and wants federal authorities totake over the investigation.

(AP) - The mother of a prostitute whose remainswere found in a Long Island marsh says she believes her daughterwas murdered by a serial killer, and wants federal authorities totake over the investigation.
A lawyer for the family released a letter to the JusticeDepartment on Tuesday requesting that the FBI lead an investigationinto the death of Shannan Gilbert, and 10 other people whoseremains were found scattered along Long Island's Atlantic coastover the past year.
Attorney John Ray says he thinks police bungled theinvestigation from the beginning. Gilbert's mother says she doesn'tbelieve a police theory that her daughter drowned accidentally.
Her remains were discovered near Oak Beach last week after ayearlong search.
A cause of death has yet to be determined.
