Charges were filed Monday against a convicted sex offender who police believe was planning to sexually assault a 5-year-old girl.
Timothy Iberer, 27, listened at the Morris County Courthouse as charges were read against him for burglary, attempted sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities say Iberer broke into a Pequannock home and attempted to sexually assault a 5-year-old girl living there. The assault was cut short when the mother entered the room after hearing noises and scared Iberer off, according to officials.
Iberer was arrested last Friday. Police believe he may have broken into the home on two other occasions.
The suspect already has a 2002 conviction for molesting an 8-year-old. Bail has been set at $1 million as the case heads to a grand jury. Iberer's lawyer says a plea of not guilty will be entered.
"This person is a danger to society," said Meg Rodriguez, Morris County assistant prosecutor.
