Teamsters, longshoremen and senators protested the sale of U.S. port operations to an Arab company in Newark Monday.
Port Newark is one of the ports that would be taken over by the Arab company Dubai Ports World. U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) rallied along with teamsters against the deal. Lautenberg feels the company is aligned with other Arab countries that are opposed to the U.S.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has agreed to conduct a broader investigation into Dubai Ports World. However, some lawmakers say they plan to head to Washington after the probe to draw up new legislation against the deal.
New Jersey is suing to block the deal and a hearing is scheduled in federal court Wednesday. The Port Authority has also filed a suit against the company operating Port Newark to block the firm from taking over operations.
