State Sen. Dick Codey has introduced legislation to help protect children that are accidentally left in cars by their parents.

Two children have died in New Jersey this year after overheating from being left inside of hot cars. It happened to a 21-month-old child in Lakewood in May and to a 22-month-old child in Lindenwold this past August. It also happened recently in the Bronx where a pair of 1-year-old twins died.

Police say that in the Lindenwold and Bronx cases, the parents forgot to drop the children off at day care.

Codey’s legislation would require day cares to call parents if the child is not dropped off without advanced notice.

“In K-12 the parent is required to call in, ‘My child isn’t coming in today.’ At a day care, that doesn’t happen. We want to put that requirement into place,” Codey says.

If the parent does not call the child out of day car, the workers would be required to contact the parents to find out where the child is.

Some parents tell News 12 New Jersey that they believe that this legislation would be a good idea.

“They’re already responsible for the kids day to day anyway, so from my perspective, it's not too much to ask to include that,” says Chenelle Manley of Orange.

Codey says that the bill has just been introduced. He says that he hopes to have it passed by June.
