The Semper Five race is taking place in Seaside Heights on Saturday.
The 5K and 1-mile fun run benefiting the Marine Raider Foundation is back for its 10th anniversary. The event spotlights Marines and sailors who have lost their lives or have been seriously injured. It also celebrates their families.
This year, the run is honoring 30 Gold Star families all from New Jersey.
Pictures of those fallen Marines will line the boardwalk for the first 100 yards of the race surrounded by American flags.
So far, over 1,000 people have signed up for the event, Including about 12 Marines from the McGuire Air Force Base.
"People come down sometimes the night before, they rent hotels or motels, they also go to dinners and walk the boardwalk. A lot of people here and the business community appreciates it, and the community as a whole appreciates it because we love our country,” says Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony E. Vaz.
The 5K race starts at 9:30 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run begins at 9 a.m.
