A man is dead and a woman is injured after an overnight incident inside the emergency room at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, according to City of Newburgh police.
Police say the incident began around 11 p.m. Thursday when firefighters were dispatched to the ER lobby for a pulled fire alarm. Investigators say the alarm was intentionally activated by 45-year-old Carlos Ortiz, of Newburgh.
When hospital security confronted Ortiz, police say he pulled out a knife and cut a security guard. An armed security officer then fired one shot, killing Ortiz inside the lobby.
Police say a woman who was nearby was also hurt and that her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. A woman who identified herself as the injured victim called News 12 Friday morning and claimed she was shot in the leg and is waiting for surgery at the hospital.
News 12 obtained police communications from the moments the incident unfolded.
In the recording, responders can be heard saying the “shooter is security” and that the “perp is down.”
The hospital released the following statement to News 12:
