Nearly a year since pipe bombs were discovered at Seaside Park’s annual Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K race, organizers have announced the date for this year’s event.
The fourth annual Seaside Semper Five race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, organizers said.
This year's race will follow a new course to accommodate the anticipated increased number of runners.
The race will start and finish in front of the Beachcomber, with runners staying almost entirely on the boardwalk.
News 12’s Kurt Siegelin, who emceed last year’s event, was the first to report the discovery of pipe bombs following a delayed start to the race.
A pipe bomb exploded along the course before the race started.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said up to three other pipe bombs were later found wired to the one that exploded. The other bombs did not detonate.
The race was canceled after the bomb went off.
Ahmad Rahimi is accused of planting the explosives, as well as others found in New Jersey and New York. He's currently awaiting trial.
Officials will discuss security at today's announcement.
Registration is now open. Siegelin will emcee the event, and the first 1,000 runners to register will receive two tickets to a Philadelphia Phillies game this season.
