Rep. Josh Gottheimer has announced a new bill on school safety in honor of a Woodcliff Lake native killed in the Parkland school shooting three years ago in Florida.
The name of the bill is Alyssa’s Act, in memory of Alyssa Alhadeff.
The bill requires that all public schools nationwide have silent panic alarms.
“Only 29% of schools report using silent alarms that are directly connected to local law enforcement,” Gottheimer says. “That’s it. Only 29% of schools have silent alarms installed across the country that would immediately notify police of an active shooter. That number is entirely too low.”
Parkland did not have the alarms.
The bill also increases access to school resource officers.
