Thousands of New Jersey kids will be looking for new ways to get to school after school districts announced they were yanking bus service for private school students. The districts say their decision boils down to money. School district representatives say they can?t afford the gas for the state-funded buses that carry only a dozen or so children at a time. The bus companies that run the routes concur that it?s not economical.Canceling the service leaves parents like Lou Cobo in the lurch. He says his family needs the income from two salaries and neither he nor his wife can leave their jobs to pick up their child every day. The schools say students who continue to attend private school will get $800 in lieu of a bus ride. Parents say that money won?t solve their problem.
