The Point Pleasant Beach School District is expanding its anti-bullying mission to include incidents that take place off campus.

The district is now expanding its policy and will dish out bullying punishments after the bell rings for the day. The school board?s president says being harassed outside of school affects a student?s ability to learn when he returns.

?A child is not immune to these same bullies when he?s walking past them the next day at school,? says School Board President Eileen Laterza.

Many parents support the move and say outside bullying is likely to make its way on campus. Some students, however, believe the district is overstepping its bounds with the policy change.

?If it happens outside the school, I don?t think the school should have any right to do anything about it,? says Point Pleasant Beach senior Allison Montecallo.

The policy carries possible punishments of verbal warnings, detention and, in severe cases, expulsion. It also outlines consequences for retaliation against students that have reported bullying to administrators.
