Former Rutgers University football coach Greg Schiano was introduced today as the new head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 45-year-old Schiano had been with the Scarlet Knights for 11 seasons. Schiano admits he was sad to leave the Scarlet Knights, but says everything about the Bucs organization felt right. Schiano came to Rutgers when the football program was in a state of disarray. He left less than a week before the program is expected to lock up a highly touted recruiting class.
There is, however, no doubt that Schiano leaves Rutgers football in far better shape than he found it in back in 2000. The New Jersey native had six winning seasons in the last seven years, and was 5-1 in bowl games. Rutgers had been to just one bowl game before he arrived.
Longtime assistant coach Kyle Flood has been named the interim head coach as Rutgers University Director of Athletics Tim Pernetti looks for a permanent replacement.
