New Jersey investigators are testing some of the saved food from a Taco Bell customer who got sick with the E. coli bacteria.
The New Jersey Health Department has asked that all Taco Bells in the state sanitize the restaurants after an E. coli outbreak sickened dozens in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Investigators have determined the source of the bacteria came from produce, not meat. As a result of some tests, Taco Bell has since removed all green onions from its 5,800 restaurants nationwide.
Investigators say all of the Taco Bells involved in the outbreak got their packaged produce from the same place, the McLane company in Texas. Food from the company?s distribution center in Burlington Township is also being tested. The food includes green onions, other onions, cilantro, tomatoes and lettuce.
The state health department has also requested that all food workers at Taco Bell be tested for E. coli. Those workers who do have a strain of E. coli will not be allowed to return to work until tests show it is out of their systems.
