Rutgers University officials are warning students there may be an aggressive coyote in the area that bit someone walking near campus.

The university’s police department tweeted Thursday evening following the attack.

According to police, a man said he was walking Thursday around 4 a.m. on the footpath of Avenue E, near Hospital Road, when a coyote ran out from the trees and bit him.

Police say the attack happened in the area of Rutgers Preserve on the Livingston campus in Piscataway. Rutgers Preserve is closed today.

The victim was treated at a hospital and released.

Officials are warning people to avoid contact with stray or wild animals, and to not attempt to remove or disturb wildlife.

If approached by the animal, officials say to make yourself as big and loud as possible, and to not turn your back on the animal.

Patrols have been increased in the area.

The Rutgers Police Department is providing escorts to students, faculty and staff upon request.

Officials are currently working with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.
