A Rutgers University student was critically injured at a home in New Brunswick earlier this week, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say that the Rutgers Police Department was responding to a disconnected 911 call just before 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 15. Officials say that when officers arrived, they found a 19-year-old unresponsive and with “serious injuries.”

The student was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Details about the student’s injuries or what happened were not provided.

News 12 has learned that the Rutgers University Office of Sorority and Fraternity Affairs issued a cease-and-desist order for all activities by the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity on Wednesday. News 12 has also learned that the fraternity’s College Avenue house was condemned by the city as being unsafe. The cease-and-desist and the condemnation of the house both occurred on the same day that the student was injured.

Rumors have been swirling around campus as to what happened. Several students told News 12 that they saw police officers at the Alpha Sigma Phi house on College Avenue for hours.

"Everybody's talking about it…I mean, I just want to make sure the guy's fine. Whoever got hurt, whatever incident happened,” says Rutgers Junior Ethan Rovins. “Police were at all the doors, all the entrances, all the exits."

“Honestly, it happens every year,” said Rutgers junior Ryan Amir. “I feel like it's bound to happen. But this one might have been one of the worst ones we've heard, based on what happened to the actual kid.”

College Avenue is full of fraternity and sorority houses that don’t want this police investigation hurting their image.

“It gives us a bad look on all of Greek life in general,” said Rovins.

“Hopefully, he has a good recovery, and hopefully, whoever did it was held accountable,” Amir said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Richard McNulty, of the Rutgers University Police Department, at 848-932-1889 or Detective Javier Morillo, of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, at 732-745-8843.
