Rutgers University President Jonathan Halloway has announced that he will be stepping down at the end of the school year.
The announcement came today in a message sent out to the Rutgers community.
“Serving as the university president has been an enormous privilege and responsibility,” he said in prepared remarks. “Throughout my tenure, I have been appreciative of the former and respectful of the latter.”
Holloway says he will be taking a sabbatical for the 2025-2026 school year, then will return to long-standing research projects before joining the faculty on a full-time basis.
“There is plenty to do before I complete my term and I remain focused on that work, especially that which is committed to the connections between Rutgers and civic preparedness and civil discourse. But whatever the topic, I remain steadfast in my belief that Rutgers is on the rise and is earning the respect it has long deserved,” he said.
Holloway is the university’s 21st president. He began his tenure amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
