Thousands of runners kicked off Memorial Day weekend in the annual Spring Lake Five Mile Run.
The run goes up the length of Ocean Avenue and signals the beginning of the summer season.
The five-mile run started in 1977 with only 500 runners and has become a long-standing tradition for some of the 12,000 runners that participated Saturday.
While the race is known to many as a social run, others took the competition seriously.
Race winner Andrew Brodeur completed the race with a time of 24 minutes and 35 seconds. He won the race last year as well.
While it may not have been a good beach day, runners enjoyed ideal conditions with temperatures in the 60s, overcast skies and a light ocean breeze.
