Roselle Mayor Donald Shaw is being questioned about where he is going with his municipal car.
News 12 New Jersey's Chris Keating has received documents showing Mayor Shaw racked up nearly $5,000 worth of E-ZPass violations.
The E-ZPass violations were recorded at the Goethals Bridge, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the Lincoln Tunnel over a two-year period.
The violations came to light after Councilwoman Cynthia Johnson learned of a check for $4,952 of taxpayer money that was made out to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - and signed by Mayor Don Shaw.
"Why are the taxpayers paying for his violations?" asked Johnson.
Councilwoman Johnson says municipal vehicles are reserved for borough business. She said municipal vehicles can’t be taken across state lines without permission.
News 12 was given a copy of 49 violations. One violation was for $66 at the Goethals Bridge on March 26. Another violation was at the Lincoln Tunnel in April, also for $66. There were two violations from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on June 28 and four more from that same day totaling $220.
Sylvia Turnage is a concerned citizen who says she believes the mayor should step down until this is resolved.
"I need to know what borough business you have at 2 a.m. in Brooklyn or Queens," Turnage said.
News 12 received the following response from the Borough Administration in Roselle:
"The Borough of Roselle has been examining over-billed charges on the municipal E-ZPass Account. The Borough has several municipal vehicles that require 24/7 operations. Our primary focus is to ensure accurate billing for all of these vehicles. The Borough is now working with E-ZPass officials to determine an accurate bill and to remove any inaccurate or excessive fees."
News 12 reached out to Mayor Shaw for a comment on his use of the municipal car but has not received a response.
