One of New Jersey's most iconic landmarks is getting a new way for visitors to experience it.
Paterson's Great Falls National Historical Park is at the center of a growing effort to boost tourism and showcase the city's history, culture and outdoor attractions.
Mayor Andre Sayegh says the falls, which once powered Paterson's factories, are now helping drive tourism and economic development.
"This beautiful blessing in the past has been used to power factories, but now we're hoping it will power tourism," Sayegh said.
Visitors can explore the Great Falls from the amphitheater, a new pedestrian bridge and the River Walk, which offer expanded access and views of the landmark.
Construction is also underway on the Great Falls Center, which is expected to include a food hall, rooftop restaurant and additional attractions designed to encourage longer visits.
Just a short walk away is the restored Hinchliffe Stadium, one of the last remaining Negro League ballparks in the country.
The stadium is now home to several sports teams, including the New Jersey Jackals, the New York Cosmos and the Jersey Shore Wave.
Nearby, the Charles J. Muth Museum highlights Paterson's role in civil rights history and the struggle for equality in sports.
Visitors can also stop by Vista Park, one of New Jersey's newest state parks, which offers views of the New York City skyline.
To complete a visit, travelers can head to Lambert Castle, home to a museum and library overlooking the city.
Officials say the area's mix of history, sports, culture and outdoor recreation is helping redefine Paterson as a destination beyond its famous waterfall.
