At the highest point in New Jersey, winter moves at a different pace as cross-country skiers glide along snow-covered trails at the High Point Cross Country Ski Center in Sussex.
Unlike traditional downhill skiing, cross-country skiers move without chair lifts or steep slopes. The sport relies entirely on body movement.
“It is a way of floating on top of the snow going back hundreds of years, thousands of years,” said Hans Carlson, co-owner of High Point Cross Country Skiing.
The focus at the center is on getting people outdoors and active. Carlson said the movement is similar to walking, with the main difference being the glide of the skis.
That simplicity is what makes the sport accessible to beginners. No prior experience or expensive equipment is required.
The center offers rentals, lessons and groomed trails to help first-time skiers get started.
For some, learning the technique comes quickly. Others take more time to get comfortable on the skis.
Trails are groomed to keep the snow packed and create solid tracks, Carlson said.
The High Point Cross Country Ski Center is the only place in New Jersey that offers cross-country skiing.
For those who want a less demanding option, snowshoeing is also available at the center.
Carlson said the activities are family-friendly and allow people of different skill levels to stay together.
It serves as a reminder that winter adventures do not always require a long trip or extreme conditions.
