After 121 years, Ridgewood finally has its first woman firefighter.
Shelby Taylor has been a Ridgewood firefighter since January, but she will officially be sworn in Wednesday night. She is also a U.S. Marine.
Taylor said she had always wanted to be a firefighter and her sense of duty and serving others translated well.
"I knew the job could be dangerous, but it's also so rewarding and it's very similar to the military with this brotherhood, this chain of command. How it's one team, one fight, so it was destiny, I think,” she said.
Ridgewood Fire Department Chief James Van Goor said he’s happy to have Taylor as part of the team and would like to see more woman join the department.
"She's just like everybody else. (Taylor) does what she has to do, and she's not afraid and gets the job done,” the fire chief said.
