A Rider University freshman is in critical condition Friday and police are trying to determine if a night of binge drinking may have included hazing by a fraternity.
Police rushed to the Phi Kappa Tau frat house after getting a report that a student was vomiting from drinking alcohol. Police say 18-year-old Gary Devercelly, of California, and another student were taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. Devercelly's parents flew in from California as their son remained in the intensive care unit.
Rider University President Mordechai Rozanski says the school is fully cooperating with the Mercer County Prosecutor?s Office and its investigation into the incident. Rozanski admits that even though this has never happened before at Rider University, it is time to take a close look at what?s happening on campus.
University officials say depending on the outcome of the investigation, the fraternity could be forced off campus or lose its charter.
