Richard Codey says he is 'honored' to take over for McGreevey
(08/13/04) WEST ORANGE - New Jersey State Senate President Richard Codey (D) held a short press conference Friday to discuss the transition of power in the wake of Governor Jim McGreevey's (D-NJ) resignation. Codey will take over on November 15.
Codey said he was "honored" to be taking over for McGreevey, and he said the state will be "in very good hands." Codey also supported McGreevey's decision to delay the handover until November 15. The state senator said the delay will ensure a smooth transfer of power.
The New Jersey State Constitution dictates that the state senate president must become the acting governor when McGreevey steps down. The rule will force Codey to perform double duty, as he will still be the state senate president and acting governor at the same time. When asked if the constitution should be amended because of this, Codey said the possibility should be investigated.
Jim McGreevey's decision to step down in November has caused some political controversy. State Republicans believe he should leave office right away so a special election can be held for his replacement. When asked about the controversy, Codey said the governor had made his decision and all involved parties need to adhere to New Jersey's constitution.
McGreevey stunned New Jersey residents Thursday when he admitted he was gay and resigned from office. During the news conference for his resignation, McGreevey admitted having an extramarital affair with another man.
