Students claim Hillsborough High School officials dropped the ball in their handling of a school threat situation.
The school was closed Thursday after someone discovered threats in a bathroom. Many students said their activities and sporting events were canceled due to the closure. They believe the threats were a prank meant to disrupt the school, and the closure forced innocent students to pay for someone?s bad behavior.
?I was supposed to go to Washington D.C. today, to the Holocaust Museum, we?re not going obviously. They canceled it,? senior Laryssa Hamersky said. ?And it wasn?t a matter of safety they said, it was punishment.?
Many students are also upset because the school was going to be closed Friday, but will now be open to make up for Thursday?s missed classes. They said since the prom is Friday night, they will now have to change pre-prom appointments and schedules.
This is the second threat the school has received this month. Students said during the last threat, extra security was put in place and classes were not canceled.
Student leaders met with the school superintendent Thursday about the prom on Friday. An agreement was made to allow students attending prom to leave at 1 p.m., if they have a note from home.
Meanwhile, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said a $500 reward is being offered for information on the threats.
