Residents on a local street in Edison say that they are fed up with truckers using their road as a shortcut.
Patricia Spearnock says that for the past five years trucks have been driving down her quiet road of Gracey Street, causing damage. She set up surveillance cameras to catch some of the action.
“Over the curb, onto the grass…he has to back up and move forward a few times before he manages to,” she says.
Spearnock says that trucks have pulled down wires from her home.
Spearnock is not alone. Other neighbors say that they are also frustrated with the situation.
“In the past few days we see five-to-10 a day. They race down the street. Some do slow down, but they race through,” says Lorene Giordano. “A year ago they pulled the service off of my house.”
The neighbors say that police officers do show up from time to time and hand out tickets. But they say that after a while, the trucks return.
The drivers are typically coming off Route 1 North, heading for Route 514 East. Drivers often mistake Gracey Street for the next exit.
The Edison City Council is now involved.
“When we get calls like this, as a councilman in the fifth-largest municipality in New Jersey, we need to pay close attention to it,” says Councilman Joseph Coyle.
Coyle says that the council is working with local and state officials to resolve the problem.
The residents say that they want to see the exit shut down altogether, and their street turned into a dead end. They say that if the matter isn't resolved soon, they plan to take legal action.
