Monday was Flag Day, and VFW Post 376 in West Orange retired one Sunday.
A ceremonial burning is done when flags grow old or become damaged.
"This is very important because it signifies the unity of our flag," says Councilwoman Tammy Williams. "This is an opportunity for us to represent and acknowledge those who have served, and the ceremonial impact that this flag has on us as a nation, and as a community."
Williams says it's important to retire flags properly. They should never touch the ground and shouldn't be disposed of.
It's an "honor and dignity", and she wants to ensure everyone understands.
