According to NOAA fisheries, humpback whale deaths have gone up along the Atlantic coast since 2016.
The event was declared an Unusual Mortality Event in April of 2017.
In New York, there have been 36 humpback whale strandings in the last seven years.
Many of those have shown evidence of pre-mortem vessel strike, but that hasn't been the cause for all.
Preliminary findings revealed the whale suffered hemorrhaging consistent with blunt force trauma.
The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society says a full necropsy will still be performed.
