A Bronx councilman has come up with an idea about what do with a dilapidated Grand Concourse church.
The church, located at the corner of 175th Street and the Grand Concourse, has fallen into disrepair with holes in the walls and a collapsed ceiling.
The Department of Housing Preservation tells News 12 it installed scaffolding and is maintaining the building since the property owner has failed to do so.
Records indicate that Pilgrim United Church owns the building.
Rep. Ritchie Torres is introducing legislation that would establish the site as a land bank. The land bank would be a vehicle for taking properties and then redeveloping it into a community asset, including affordable housing or a community center.
News 12 did reach out to the building's owner. A woman named Shirley claims the church is actually under construction and is not abandoned.
