Rep. Frank Pallone says that there is still a lot to be done to help hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico get back on its feet.

Pallone returned from a trip to the island over the weekend, along with 60 New Jersey state troopers who also went on a separate trip to assist in the relief effort.

The troopers say that the storm crippled the island.

“They don’t have power. It’s coming up into the holidays, you see the Christmas decorations there,” says State Police Capt. Sean Kilcomons.

It is estimated that half of Puerto Rico is still without power nearly three months after Hurricane Maria battered the island.

“The whole island looks like what we had after Sandy,” says Pallone. “The magnitude of it is just unbelievable."

Pallone met with officials and residents in Perth Amboy Monday where around 100 families from Puerto Rico have resettled since the storm. 

The congressman is the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He says that the federal government’s proposal to spend an additional $44 billion on recovery won't come close to rebuilding Puerto Rico's power grid.

Pallone also visited the U.S. Virgin Islands, which he describes as also being in poor condition.

This latest deployment of state troopers to the island is expected to be the last one under Gov. Chris Christie. Gov.-elect Phil Murphy has not said whether he will send troopers, but has said that New Jersey must do as much as possible in the recovery.
