A New Jersey congressman is preparing to reintroduce legislation he says will help prevent drowning deaths.
The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act has expired. It was introduced after the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker III drowned in 2008. She was sucked under the water by a drain in a hot tub.
Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer is now calling on both chambers to pass a reauthorization of the law. He says he will introduce the legislation later this week.
“There’s nothing partisan about saving a child from drowning. This is not a Republican issue. It’s not a Democratic issue. It’s just what’s good for New Jersey and good for our country,” Gottheimer said.
The original law aimed at enhancing the safety of public and private pools and spas, reducing child drownings and reducing the number of suction entrapment incidents.
Gottheimer’s legislation will also create a grant awareness campaign and promote strong swimming skills.
