Religious leaders rallied in Newark Thursday to call attention to a man who was deported while there is an ongoing investigation to an alleged abuse case.
Faruk Karimu was deported back to Ghana this week. The leaders say that the deportation came without warning while an investigation is underway into Karimu's claim that he was abused by correctional officers at Newark's Essex County Correctional Facility.
The leaders say that this situation shows why a civilian oversight board is needed.
"We…need there to be a way for us to have eyes inside the detention center to make sure that those in there are getting taken care of and are getting out as expeditiously as possible,” says the Rev. Timothy Adkins-Jones Senior, of Bethany Baptist Church.
The clergy members say that other demonstrations are planned for the future.
