6h agoMore than 1,100 runners participated in the 45th Westport Minute Man race Sunday.
Organizers say it had a record turnout for the event held at Compo Beach.
Runners competed in 5K and 10K races.
The race is a key fundraiser for the Westport Young Woman's League.
This year, the nonprofit is focusing their grant funding on education, health and well being, and supporting underserved women. Local beneficiaries include the VFW, Circle of Hope and Dress for Success.
Its president says as the race has expanded, it's become a celebration with music, food trucks and kids' activities.
"This is the best part, when the racers come across the finish line. There's a lot of energy. Family, friends, league members coming to cheer them on. We have runners who have been coming with their families and their kids for decades. Kids that are now grown, they bring their kids," says Bridget Flynn.
