A record number of New Jersey voters hit the polls Tuesday, making it the state's biggest turnout since the days of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

About 35 percent of the Garden State's registered voters turned out, a percentage not reached in nearly 70 years. More than 1.1 million ballots were cast in the state's Democratic primary, while almost 600,000 took part in Republican race.

Ingrid Reed, of Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics, says moving the state's primary to Super Tuesday helped generate voter interest. "Because the date was changed, we were a player in the big election day," says Reed.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won the state's GOP primary. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) beat Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on the Democratic side.
