A 21‑year‑old New Jersey woman died after slipping off a hiking trail near the summit of Mount Marcy in New York.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said she called Essex County 911 around 3:05 p.m. Thursday, reporting that she and a dog had slipped and could not get back on the trail.

Rangers responded on a snowmobile, along with an aviation unit from the New York State Police attempting a hoist rescue. Heavy cloud cover prevented the helicopter crew from seeing the hiker.

At about 6:06 p.m., a ranger from the helicopter crew was lowered to the ground to continue searching.

According to a statement from the department, “The Ranger located the 21‑year‑old hiker from New Jersey deceased and weather conditions prevented removal from the mountain at that time. Rangers also found the dog alive and hiked it out to safety. On the early morning of Feb. 13, NYSP Aviation inserted two Rangers to the site and recovered the hiker.”

The department offered condolences to the hiker’s family and did not release her name.

Mount Marcy is located in the High Peaks Wilderness Area in Adirondack Park.
