A bat found in a Haddonfield home has tested positive for rabies, Camden County officials said.
The bat was found April 18 in a resident’s attic. Officials said the residents safely contained and removed it before animal control took it for testing at the state Public Health and Environmental Laboratories in Trenton.
County health officials were notified April 24 that the bat tested positive for rabies.
Officials said there were no human exposures. Three cats were exposed to the bat, but county health officials received proof that the cats were vaccinated. All three cats were given rabies vaccine boosters and will be confined and observed for 45 days.
“Rabies is a serious illness, but it can be prevented by early treatment after exposure,” Commissioner Jennifer Cooley Fleisher said.
County officials are reminding residents to keep pets’ vaccinations up to date, supervise pets outdoors and contact a veterinarian immediately if a pet is bitten or scratched by a wild animal.
