A person of interest in the death of a man in Kearny Saturday night barricaded himself inside a home and eventually set fire to it, prosecutors say.

Police were informed that a man was struck by what they described as a pointed object in the area of Johnston and Kearny avenues. The unidentified man died from his injuries.

Prosecutors say a person of interest in the death then barricaded himself inside a home on Kearny Avenue. Hudson County Regional SWAT responded and attempted to negotiate with the man, who has also not been identified.

While negotiations were ongoing early Sunday morning, a fire began in the home where the man was barricaded. Prosecutors say once the fire was put out, the man exited the home and was armed with knives.

He was taken into custody. It's not clear as of Sunday afternoon what charges he will face.
