Two young trick-or-treaters and a teenager were hurt when they were struck by a car Halloween night in Bayonne.
The Hudson County prosecutor confirms that a 5-year-old boy and his 1-year-old brother were trick-or-treating with their grandmother when two cars collided at the intersection of Avenue C and 16th Street. The crash caused one of the cars to go onto the sidewalk, striking the brothers and a 17-year-old boy. The grandmother was not hurt.
Tony Rios says that he witnessed the crash and rushed over with others to help the victims.
“A bunch of guys lifted the car up, because the baby was under the car,” he says. “It was crazy. Too crazy to think about.”
Rios says that the community came together to get help for the children.
The victims were rushed to the hospital. Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis says that some of the injuries are serious, but everyone is expected to recover. Davis says that it is a reminder for drivers and pedestrians alike to pay attention when out and about.
“Obviously someone was distracted,” Davis says.
Authorities say that the 1-year-old boy has been released from the hospital. The 5-year-old and 17-year-old are in stable condition.
Both drivers stayed on the scene and no charges have been filed so far.
Anyone who may have information related to the crash is urged to contact the Bayonne Police Department or the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
